How to Set Your Bicycle Saddle Height Correctly

Got a new bike? You’ll want to make sure your saddle is set to the correct height for you. Setting your bike saddle to the proper height will make your rides safer and more comfortable, allowing you to ride farther and more often without putting unnecessary stress on your body. Watch our video to learn how to do this in a few easy steps!

First, if your bike has rear suspension, you’ll need to set the correct sag (learn how here). Additionally, if your bike has a dropper post, be sure it’s in the fully extended position. Then follow these instructions:

Measure Your Inseam

Place a book between your legs and stand against a wall so that the book is level. Then, make a mark, placing the spine between your legs and one of the ends of the book square against the wall. Measure from the floor to the mark that you made—this is your inseam measurement.

Calculate Starting Saddle Height

Take that inseam measurement and multiply it by 0.885. This will be your starting point for your saddle height.

Set Saddle Position

Measure from the center of your cranks to the center of your saddle and set your starting saddle height.

Now, put on your shoes and sit on the bike. Place your heels on the pedals and pedal backwards until your leg is fully extended. Adjust the height up or down until your knee is just locked out at the fully extended position.
