The world of e-bikes is advancing more rapidly than ever, as new models feature computer control units and brand-specific apps that transform the riding experience. As anyone who’s ridden an electric bike already knows, e-bike technologies have made cycling more convenient, accessible, and exhilarating. Those breakthroughs will continue to evolve as revolutionary innovations are introduced.

One such innovation is already changing the game: Aventon, one of the premiere e-bike manufacturers in the U.S., has launched the Aventon Control Unit, or ACU. This technology appeared in late 2024 on Aventon’s Abound SR electric cargo bike. Let’s explore the ACU, a highly capable machine that makes e-bike riding even more fun, efficient, and secure.

What Is an E-Bike's Control Unit?

First, it’s helpful to know what the control unit on an e-bike does. Often called the brain of an electric bicycle, the control unit is an electronic component that manages the power flow from the battery to the motor, controlling critical functions like speed and pedal assistance level. It acts as the central processing unit that ensures a smooth and efficient experience, based on rider input from sensors like the throttle, pedals, and brakes.

It’s no exaggeration to say that the control unit maintains the overall performance of the e-bike! There are already several different kinds of control units out there, with more sure to come as e-bikes continue to grow in popularity. But why is the ACU unique?

What Sets the Aventon Control Unit Apart?

The Aventon Control Unit (ACU) enables a ton of new features that can be broadly split into two categories: connectivity and security. Connectivity features include:

  • Highly accurate GPS tracking
  • Geofencing to define where the bike can be ridden (this also works as a security feature by disabling the bike if it gets stolen)
  • Over-the-air firmware updates
  • Remote settings changes
  • Cloud synchronization that allows the cyclist to store ride data and sync it with the Aventon app
    • This enables the cyclists to analyze and compare ride metrics like speed, distance, and battery usage.

Meanwhile, the security features offered by the ACU include:

  • Startup password to prevent unauthorized access
  • Integrated rear wheel or kickstand lock (depending on the model) that won’t let the bike move when activated
  • Unusual activity detection and alarm to deter thieves
  • Electronic battery lock to keep this valuable piece of tech secure

All of these features and more can be controlled and tuned with the Aventon MyRide app.

One more amazing thing the ACU offers is Ride Tune. This customizable feature allows you to adjust the max assistance and motor torque of each assist mode so you can tune the bike to the exact feel that you want. While the presets out of the box work great for most riders, it’s good to know that you can adjust the control unit to your exact preferences if desired.

In short, the ACU keeps the e-bike and the rider protected and connected like never before—especially when paired with the Aventon MyRide app.

Discover How the ACU Transforms Your Ride

So far, the Aventon Control Unit is only available on the Abound SR, Abound LR, and Level.3 models, but this exciting innovation is sure to become a mainstay on Aventon e-bikes in the future. That’s good news for electric bike riders, since the ACU’s features will keep you and your bike protected while allowing you to track and sync ride data more conveniently than ever.

While the ACU is an especially groundbreaking development, there will undoubtedly be more to come in the world of electric bicycles. Check our blog for updates and read our Electric Bike Buying Guide for in-depth information.
